Flea bite   Allergen in saliva injected into skin   Inflammation at sites of previous flea bites   intense itching   licking and scratching   increased inflammation and itching, thus perpetuating the cycle.


1) Flea control.

  1. Must be diligent.
  2. Advantage, Frontline, or Revolution - monthly applications, only bathe immediately before an application. 
  3. Treat all animals in the household.
  4. Treat the house and yard if severely infested.

2) Anti-inflammatory drugs (corticosteroids such as dexamethasone and prednisone)

   1. Taper the dose - never discontinue abruptly.
   2. Side effects include increased drinking, urination, and appetite, restlessness and panting.
   3. Treat secondary skin infections if present.
