Pyometra is a life-threatening uterine infection characterized by a pus-filled uterus.

    * pyometra occurs only during diestrus or 2-10 weeks after estrus
    * more common in animals over 5 years of age
    * occurs under the influence of progesterone
    * estrogen-> progesterone-> pyometra

 

Progesterone causes:

  1. decrease in WBC response
  2. decrease in myometrial contractility
  3. fluid accumulation in uterus
  4. cystic endometrial hyperplasia


SIGNALMENT:

    * adult in-tact female

 

CLINCIAL SIGNS:

    * PU/PD (excessive drinking and urination)
    * sick (especially with closed pyometra)
    * vulvar discharge (only with open pyometra)
    * anorexia
    * lethargy
    * vomiting / diarrhea
    * abdominal distention

 

ETIOLOGY

    * primary pathogen is E. COLI

 

DIAGNOSIS

    * WBC
    * PE
    * Radiographs
    * Ultrasound

 

TREATMENT:

  1. Surgery -Emergency Spay
  2. Antibiotics
  3. IV fluids
