Affects old and young dogs

Neurologic, respiratory and GI signs

CAUSATIVE AGENT

    * Distemper virus - a morbillivirus within the Paramyxoviridae family; closely related to measles virus, rinderpest virus of cattle, and phocine (seal) and dolphin distemper viruses

SIGNLAMENT

    * young, unvaccinated puppies
    * immunocompromised animals

TRANSMISSION

    * aerosol - inhaled and replicates in lymphoid tissue
    * shed from sick and recovering animals for approximately 2 months

SIGNS

    * respiratory
    * ocular and nasal discharge
    * sneezing
    * pneumonia
    * GI
    * diarrhea
    * foot pad and nasal planum
    * hyperkeratosis "hard pad disease"
    * neurologic signs
    * multifocal
    * enamel hypoplasia
    * optic neuritis and retinal lesions

DIAGNOSIS

    * history, CSF, IFA test, TTW, conjunctival scrape

TREATMENT

    * supportive care

PREVENTION

    * vaccination

PROGNOSIS

    * poorer prognosis with neurologic signs
